Natural Connections

In one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, where open discussion of environmental issues can be dangerous, sound and the creative arts can be a powerful tool for conversation.

Myanmar is a country severely affected by climate change, with communities suffering from extreme weather, biodiversity loss, rising sea levels and devastating earthquakes.

At the same time, ongoing political instability has made open discussions on climate issues increasingly difficult.

Natural Connections is a new project from In Place of War’s global initiative EarthSonic, fusing the rich musical traditions of Myanmar with the UK music scene.

The project has brought together community members, eight traditional musicians from Yangon and UK musicians MNENE (Mel Uye-Parker) and Lucy Tun to collaborate on a brand new, two-track EP coming 3 April 2026.

"It motivated my love to investigate deeper into the natural landscapes of our surrounding area in Myanmar. Since I live in Yangon and rarely get out of the town, I am not that much into natural landscapes."
