The War on Climate

We have partnered up with The War on Climate to launch a global campaign aiming to raise awareness of the devastating impact of conflict on our environment.

Right now - as we face a climate crisis - countries do not have to report their military emissions, and the world’s militaries are one of the biggest polluters on earth.

That’s right - under The Paris Agreement, a legally binding international treaty on climate change adopted in 2015 aimed at limiting global warming to well below 2°C - countries are only required to report military emissions on a voluntary basis. Unsurprisingly, most do not.

Emissions could therefore be 10 times worse than officially reported. Did you know:

  • Military operations cause over 5.5% of all global greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

  • If the military sector were a nation, it would have the 4th largest carbon footprint in the world.

  • Rich nations allocate 30x more resources to military spending than environmental impacts (TNI, 2022).

This COP30, we want to change this. Over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing the ways in which you can take action to tackle military emissions and hold world leaders accountable.
