Shingai

SHINGAI is a Zimbabwean-British singer, songwriter and musician, known as the vocalist and bassist for the multi platinum indie rock band, Noisettes. 

The voice behind iconic tracks like "Never Forget You", "Don't Upset The Rhythm", "Wild Young Hearts"& Denis Ferrer's house classic "Hey Hey" to name a few.

In 2024 the hit single "Never Forget You" reached a major milestone when it achieved platinum certification, largely fueled by it's popularity on TikTok, with an impressive 3 billion streams. This success came 15 years after the song's initial release.

Having studied circus skills, dance and theatre, Shingai’s on-stage performances are an all-round show for spectators, with Rolling Stone magazine saying "Shingai is a living, breathing manifestation of the Rock & Roll spirit, with a voice that is equal parts Iggy Pop and Billie Holiday." 

From cartwheels on stage to singing upside-down from balconies she always captures the audience not only with stage presence and phenomenal band, but with her voice & exceptional musicianship. 

Touring extensively over the years - Shingai has graced the stage at festivals like Coachella, Isle of Wight, Wireless, V Festival ,Glastonbury, Summersonic Japan the 2012 London Olympics Festival, 'Lake of Stars' (Malawi), HiFa (Zimbabwe) and The Havana World Music Festival (Cuba)

Shingai has also collaborated with musical acts such as Patti Smith, Annie Lennox, Paul Weller, Graham Coxon, Dizzee Rascal, Paul McCarthy, RZA (Wu Tang Clan), acclaimed Zimbabwean artists, such as the late Oliver Mtukudzi & Chiwoniso and many more on independent projects.

Shingai launched her solo career in 2019 with the debut EP "Ancient Futures" and followed it up with her critically acclaimed debut album "Too Bold" in 2020, both released on her own label Zimtron Records. 

During the successful independent campaign of 'Too Bold' a critically acclaimed album, Shingai boldly addressed themes of Female empowerment calling to an end to Neo-Colonialisation in the Global South.

As a natural hair champion and icon - Shingai was a crucial part of an international campaign ending discrimination against black hair which led to passing of the “Crown Act” bill (eradicating race-based discrimination, ensuring that traits historically associated with race, such as hair texture and protective hairstyles, are protected from discrimination in the workplace and schools)

In 2022 a part of Black Lives in Music and Women and Equality Committee , Shingai spoke in front of the UK Parliament regarding the ongoing misogyny in the music industry.

Shingai is a passionate advocate for important societal issues surrounding social justice. She continues to use her voice & influential platform to re-uplift a more realistic, positive image of African culture worldwide.
